Achieving ecological restoration by working with local people: a Chinese scholar seeks win-win paths Ecology and Society
Zheng, Heran; College of Economic Management, Beijing Forestry University; zhengheran@foxmail.com; Wang, Guosheng; China Law Society; gshwang@126.com.
Environmental degradation and poverty are linked, and this means that conservation and poverty reduction must be tackled together. However, finding a successful integrated strategy has been an elusive goal. We describe the career of a Chinese scholar, Shixiong Cao, whose persistent efforts to find and follow win-win paths have led to ecological restoration accompanied by long-term benefits for local residents. Cao’s story illustrates how development that combines environmental and economic perspectives can both help people to escape the poverty trap and restore degraded environments. His experience demonstrates that when environmental managers find solutions that can mitigate or eliminate poverty through the development of green enterprises, they...

Charcoal anatomy of Brazilian species. I. Anacardiaceae Anais da ABC (AABC)
GONÇALVES,THAÍS A.P.; SCHEEL-YBERT,RITA.
ABSTRACT Anthracological studies are firmly advancing in the tropics during the last decades. The theoretical and methodological bases of the discipline are well established. Yet, there is a strong demand for comparative reference material, seeking for an improvement in the precision of taxonomic determination, both in palaeoecological and palaeoethnobotanical studies and to help preventing illegal charcoal production. This work presents descriptions of charcoal anatomy of eleven Anacardiaceae species from six genera native to Brazil (Anacardium occidentale, Anacardium parvifolium, Astronium graveolens, Astronium lecointei, Lithrea molleoides, Schinus terebenthifolius, Spondias mombin, Spondias purpurea, Spondias tuberosa, Tapirira guianensis, and Tapirira...

Diagnosis of extractivism, processing and marketing of products from butia plantations in Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) ExtensaoRural
Ambrosini, Larissa Bueno; Roldan, Bruna Bresolin; Bremm, Carolina; Kroeff, Denise Reif.
Brazil is home to 37 genera of palm trees that participate in the ecologicalbalance of different biomes. In the southern region there is a genus of palm tree, Butia spp., which has eight species, and is threatened with extinction. Butiá extractivism, through management that allows its rational exploration, can be an alternative to encourage its preservation. The aim of this article is to present a diagnosis of the extraction of butia plant in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, providing systematized data about this reality. The first stage of the research consisted of a survey on thenumber of properties that have areas of butia groves throughout the state, through Emater-RS. Based on these data, it was possible to define a statistically representative sample,...

Glow Worms as a Tourist Attraction in Springbrook National Park: Visitor Attitudes and Economic Issues AgEcon
Wilson, Clevo; Tisdell, Clement A.; Merritt, David.
Insect-based tourism mainly caters to a niche market, but its popularity has been growing in recent years. Despite its popularity this form of tourism has remained under-researched and in a sense its contribution to the tourism industry has gone mostly unnoticed. This paper reports the results of a study undertaken on one form of popular insect-based tourism, namely glow worms. The study was undertaken in Springbrook National Park (Natural Bridge section) southeast Queensland, which has one of the largest glow worm colonies in Australia that attracts thousands of visitors each year. A study of this form of tourism is important and useful for several reasons. It is important to understand this hitherto under-studied tourism activity to determine the...

Managing Forests for Sustainable Economic Development: Optimal Use and Conservation of Forests AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A..
The conservation of natural forests contributes significantly to the goal of achieving sustainable economic development. There is, however, growing concern that natural forests (which provide tangible and intangible economic benefits to humankind) are being lost at a rate which (combined with other factors) seriously threatens sustainable economic development because of the environmental and social impacts of such loss. There is little doubt that in order to achieve sustainable development, multifunctional forest ecosystems (as well as other important ecosystems) need to be managed appropriately. However, determining the socially optimal level of conservation and use of forests is a challenging task. From a human point of view, it is clearly not optimal to...

The Agglomeration Vickrey Auction for the promotion of spatially contiguous habitat management: Theoretical foundations and numerical illustrations AgEcon
Banerjee, Simanti; Shortle, James S.; Kwasnica, Anthony M..
There is much interest among economists and policy makers in the use of reverse auctions to purchase habitat conservation on private lands as a mechanism for minimizing public expenditures to achieve desired conservation outcomes. Examples are the Conservation Reserve Program (US) and Environmental Stewardship Scheme (UK). An important limitation of these auctions as implemented to date is that there is no explicit consideration of the spatial pattern of participation in the evaluation of bids. In this study we present the structure of a simple auction – the Agglomeration Vickrey Auction that implements a Vickrey-Clarke-Groves mechanism. The auction is designed to attain conservation goals through specific spatial patterns of land management while...
